A destination of the Grand Tour of the Roman countryside<\/strong>\u00a0in past centuries and the pride of the noblest families in Europe, today we can not say that we were in Rome if we did not visit the two UNESCO world heritage sites in Tivoli: Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Tivoli<\/strong>\u00a0is located just thirty kilometers from\u00a0Rome<\/strong>: a town with an extraordinary historical and artistic heritage that has always\u00a0fascinated nobles and thinkers<\/strong>\u00a0such as Suetonius, Horace and Virgil himself who described the\u00a0ancient Tibur<\/strong>\u00a0as “superb”. Precisely the\u00a0ancient Romans<\/strong>, who from the IV A.C. contributed to the magnificent development of Tivoli, built\u00a0extraordinary architectural structures\u00a0<\/strong>that, although today are only vestiges, give us a sense of the greatness of Rome at that time, just as\u00a0Villa Adriana\u00a0<\/strong>still does today.<\/p>\n

The grandiose Villa Adriana<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Villa Adriana<\/strong><\/a>, or Hadrian\u2019s Villa, is considered\u00a0the largest mansion of all time belonging to a Roman emperor<\/strong>. Emperor\u00a0Hadrian\u00a0<\/strong>wanted it outside the city of Rome\u00a0and far from the center of power; he therefore chose a location immersed in nature and close to\u00a0thermal springs<\/strong>. The ancient Romans were already familiar with these beneficial and therapeutic sulphurous waters known as the \u2018Acque Albule\u2019 due their chalky color and their ability to cure various maladies.<\/p>\n

Villa Adriana is very\u00a0different from the typical Roman\u00a0domus<\/em><\/strong>, such as the famous\u00a0Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii<\/strong>. Adriano, who personally followed the construction that started in 117 B.C., customized it according to his military campaigns and his travels around the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n

It is said that the building was erected by the emperor in memory of his beloved Antinous, who mysteriously dead in Egypt and was later even deified by Hadrian.<\/p>\n

The symbol of the villa is undoubtedly the splendid\u00a0Maritime Theatre<\/strong>, an enchanting round portico with an ionic colonnade that encases a pond with a small, central island, reachable only by wooden drawbridges, where Adriano took refuge to meditate.<\/p>\n

Equally spectacular is the “Canopus<\/strong>“, a long, picturesque basin of water, surrounded by caryatids and culminating in a small temple dominated by a dome with unique wedge designs.<\/p>\n

There are many other surprising areas within the villa, from the “Piazza d’Oro<\/strong>” used for public functions and where portraits were found depicting\u00a0Marcus Aurelius, Sabina and Caracalla<\/strong>, to the\u00a0baths\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0Hall of the Philosophers<\/strong>. Of the latter, there are still seven large visible niches which, according to some, contained statues of sages, or according to others, contained ancient parchments and were part of a library or archive.<\/p>\n

Villa d’Este and its fountains<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hadrian\u2019s Villa is an official\u00a0UNESCO world heritage site<\/strong>, just like another place in Tivoli:\u00a0Villa d\u2019Este<\/a><\/strong>, a true\u00a0Renaissance jewel<\/strong>\u00a0built by the son of\u00a0Lucrezia Borgia<\/strong>, Cardinal\u00a0Ippolito II d\u2019Este<\/strong>. The beauty of this place lies in its magnificent and luxuriant Italian gardens with playful waterfalls, unique streams, lush vegetation and artistically decorated pathways like the “Avenue of the Hundred Fountains<\/strong>” where the water gushes on two levels, spilling forth from the mouths of eagles, and anthropomorphic sculptures.<\/p>\n

But these 50 fountains astonish further: their uniqueness lies in the fact that they simply exploit the\u00a0natural power of water<\/strong>, thanks to the underground channel created by the architect Pirro Ligorio;\u00a0additional mechanical devices<\/strong>\u00a0are only used to produce special effects.<\/p>\n

For example, the splendid\u00a0Fountain of the Organ<\/strong>\u00a0produces a melody\u00a0<\/strong>that sounds as if it is played by an organ, thanks to a combination of movements between air and water. The very unique\u00a0Fountain of the Owl<\/strong>\u00a0depicts a branch with bronze birds chirping and singing that then disappear when an owl arrives.<\/p>\n

Three fountains not to be missed are: the\u00a0Fountain of Rometta\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0which represents the\u00a0Tiber River<\/strong>, the\u00a0Fountain of the Dragons<\/strong>\u00a0which is said to have been built in one night to surprise\u00a0Pope Gregory XIII\u00a0<\/strong>as a guest of the Villa, and the monumental\u00a0Fountain of Neptune<\/strong>\u00a0in front of which there are three large ponds, where once the guests of the villa would once go fishing for freshwater fish.<\/p>\n

Other places to see in Tivoli<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Being in Tivoli, you cannot miss visiting the park of\u00a0Villa Gregoriana<\/strong>, a\u00a0FAI heritage<\/strong>site which is accessed through the\u00a0Gregorian bridge<\/strong>: it is a\u00a0natural oasis full of man-made caves\u00a0<\/strong>and an\u00a0impetuous waterfall<\/strong>\u00a0that flows into what was called in ancient times the \u201cValley of Hell<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Arrive at the\u00a0Grotta di Nettuno<\/strong>\u00a0by walking along the\u00a0path of Miollis<\/strong>, a tunnel carved into the rock with windows that create a fantastic play of light and shadow.<\/p>\n

From Villa Gregoriana you can enjoy a spectacular view of the so-called\u00a0Acropolis of Tivoli<\/strong>\u00a0which consists of two\u00a0temples<\/strong>: the first is thought to have been dedicated to the\u00a0Sibilla<\/strong>, the other is the well-preserved “Temple of Vesta<\/strong>” dating back to the 1st century B.C., the latter was originally surrounded by 18 columns in Corinthian style, and contained the sacred fire that was guarded by vestals.<\/p>\n

The visit concludes at the beautiful\u00a0Temple of Hercules Victor<\/strong>, where some of the most important summer events are held each year.<\/p>\n
