This is the true essence of the Genazzano wine producing tradition that has obtained numerous and important awards both nationally and internationally, increasing its reputation as a wine town.

As evidence of the importance of viticulture in this area I would like to point out Genazzano’s annual Wine Festival which takes place in September, during which, awaiting the arrival of winter, three days of celebration are dedicated to red and white wines of Genazzano.

The atmosphere becomes festive, wine cellars throughout town are open to the public, and you can taste the most delicious dishes representing the local culinary traditions, all washed down by the best wines that stand out here for persistence and aroma.

Genazzano’s white wine derives from the union of Malvasia grapes and other white grapes, the result is a straw-colored wine with a fruity aroma and a pleaseant and lively flavor. The red wine, on the other hand, instead comes from ciliegiolo variety of grape mixed with other red grapes that give life to a wine that is bright ruby red with a fruity fragrance and a strong and fresh flavor.

To conclude, the third d.o.c. wine of Genazzano is the Cesanese from Olevano Romano, a prized red wine of ancient origin, ruby red with violet reflections, full-bodied, soft and fresh.

Things to taste while walking through Genazzano

For dessert lovers, in Genazzano you will have the opportunity to try one of the most delicious delicacies of the confectionery tradition of the region, I’m talking about the Barachìe, the shortcrust pastry with a heart of organic plum jam and a special shape, round with crimped edges.

With the same original recipe of the Barachìe, the locals also make jelly pies by cooking the short pastry for a little longer so that it has a firmer consistency than the classic shortcrust. To taste these delicious baked products belonging to Genazzano’s art of confectionery will be possible by simply walking through the streets of the historic center and entering one of the many bakeries that you find along the way

Another traditional product of the area that you should definitely try is the doughnut made with white wine and anise seeds, commonly called Ciambelle di Genazzano, an official local recipe that belongs to the de.co brand (of municipal origin). These soft treats are easy to sink your teeth into, you can really taste the anise and wine.

Stock up on these at one of the bakeries you find along the streets in the center of town.
