The Palio of Paliano<\/strong>\u00a0(Palio dell’Assunta), which takes place every year in the municipality of Paliano during the month of\u00a0August<\/strong>, is one of the most beautiful events in the Lazio Region. Knights, ladies, princes, monks and peasants give life to an extraordinary event, the pride of the\u00a0Roman Countryside<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Palio dell’Assunta in Paliano<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Palio dell’Assunta<\/strong>, which takes place every year in the municipality of\u00a0Paliano<\/strong>, during the month of\u00a0August<\/strong>, is one of the most beautiful events in the Lazio region. Traces of this event date back to the year one thousand, in which a feast was celebrated in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption, during which there was always a period of rest.<\/p>\n

A first mention of Paliano\u2019s Palio is present in the\u00a0Statuta Terrae Paliani<\/em><\/strong>, dating back to\u00a01531<\/strong>. In these documents, it was written that the inhabitants of Paliano, of Jewish religion, were required to organize games at their own expense for a competition between the various districts of town. These games were to be held concurrently with the\u00a0August 16th celebration of the Assumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since then, Paliano\u2019s Palio has always taken place in this Lazio town in the month of August. This event opens with a historical parade, in which the participants pass through town, wearing traditional costumes. This procession is accompanied by\u00a0musicians<\/strong>,\u00a0arquebusiers<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0flag-wavers<\/strong>\u00a0and is the re-enactment of an important historical fact, namely the\u00a0victory of Marcantonio Colonna in the battle of Lepanto in 1571<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the end of this historical procession, a\u00a0Prince is elected<\/strong>\u00a0and a ceremony is held in which a blessing is bestowed upon the Palio, which is a standard with the image of the Assumption Virgin.<\/p>\n

Afterward, the\u00a0Giostra del Turco<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0competition takes place, which is a\u00a0challenge on horseback\u00a0<\/strong>where nine knights are the protagonists, representing the most famous districts in Paliano. The knights, galloping on horseback, must use a dagger to spear the largest number of rings, which are suspended above the riders and held by an enormous cutout in the\u00a0image of a Turk<\/strong>, who was defeated during the Battle of Lepanto. Whoever wins, wins the Palio, which, as previously indicated, is a standard depicting the Madonna.<\/p>\n

During this event, in Piazza Marcantonio Colonna, the\u00a0Palio dei Popolani<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is also organized. In this event, the people of Paliano participate various games, such astug of war<\/strong>, the\u00a0barrel race<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0wheelbarrow race<\/strong>. At the end of all these races, the winning neighborhood is named.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, visitors can enjoy several\u00a0shows\u00a0<\/strong>where the performers are\u00a0skilled jugglers<\/strong>, able to do extraordinary acrobatics and magic. Then in the afternoon, after mass, there is a\u00a0religious procession<\/strong>\u00a0with the statue of the Virgin of the Assumption. Banners are carried and numerous religious authorities participate in this procession.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, the\u00a0Dinner of the\u00a0Rioni<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0takes place, which is a\u00a0gastronomic event<\/strong>, where people can sip different types of\u00a0local wines<\/strong>. In these festivals, people have the opportunity to eat\u00a0local specialties<\/strong>, such as fresh fruit tarts, savory pies with salami and\u00a0tozzetti<\/em>, which are exquisite almond cookies.<\/p>\n

During the Palio of Paliano, there is also a\u00a0museum itinerary<\/strong>, where exhibitions are set up with beautiful paintings. In these paintings are mainly represented the salient facts from the life of Marcantonio Colonna.<\/p>\n

At the end of this event, you can participate in the raffle of the Assumption and you can buy\u00a0handicrafts<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0historic shops<\/strong>.
