Perhaps you may have heard of the magnificence of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/the-park-of-the-aqueducts-and-the-appian-way-in-rome\/\">aqueducts park of the Appian Way in Rome.<\/a>\u00a0Yet the water, before arriving in Rome, run across a long way, coming from the surrounding mountains. And the water route is established by other aqueducts, in particular those of\u00a0<strong>San Gregorio da Sassola<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Gallicano nel Lazio<\/strong>, in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/rome-countryside-tours\/\">Countryside of Rome<\/a>.\u00a0Today this route can be traced by lovers of\u00a0<strong>trekking<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>archeology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Trekking in the Roman countryside<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>ancient Roman aqueducts<\/strong>, although they can only be seen as engineering works, are beautiful, impressive artifacts with a high historical and archaeological value.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>San Gregorio da Sassola<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Gallicano nel Lazio<\/strong>\u00a0we find large tracts of the remains of the ancient aqueducts. Monuments isolated in the middle of nature and, therefore, even more beautiful and fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Visit them, requires the desire\u00a0<strong>to walk in the middle of nature<\/strong>, in two\u00a0<strong>trekking routes<\/strong>\u00a0with low difficulty and therefore affordable for everyone, including families with children.<\/p>\n<p>For the Romans, the aqueducts were fundamental (especially for hygiene), so much so that in the city, the water was very abundant. The territory that most of all testifies to this tendency of the Romans to organize their city giving priority to services such as water, is that of\u00a0<strong>Tivoli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, near\u00a0<strong>Poli<\/strong>\u00a0and the ancient\u00a0<strong>Tivoli\u00a0<\/strong>(Tibur Superbum) you can admire other very ancient and well preserved Roman aqueducts. They are particularly\u00a0aqueducts that served, among other things, to feed the ancient\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/tivoli-palestrina-day-tour\/\"><strong>Villa of the Emperor Hadrian<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>Villa Adriana<\/strong>)<\/a>, rich in fountains and ponds.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Gallicano nel Lazio<\/strong>\u00a0in particular, but also in San Gregorio da Sassola, the remains of the aqueducts are really fascinating and perfectly preserved.<\/p>\n<p>These two territories, which are part of the\u00a0<strong>Archaeological Polense naturalistic park<\/strong>, were also celebrated by the pictures taken by\u00a0<strong>Thomas Ashby<\/strong>\u00a0as well as paintings by the aquarellist\u00a0<strong>Ettore Roesler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8621\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8621 size-full\" title=\"trekking roman aqueducts\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/trekking-acquedotti-romani.jpg\" alt=\"trekking-acquedotti-romani\" width=\"620\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/trekking-acquedotti-romani.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/trekking-acquedotti-romani-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.whereelse.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/trekking-acquedotti-romani-600x334.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">trekking roman aqueducts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The aqueducts of San Gregorio da Sassola<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the most famous aqueducts in this area is the<strong>\u00a0Ponte della Mola<\/strong>. This aqueduct is located near San Gregorio da Sassola and is made of 8 double-order arches. You can reach this aqueduct by crossing a dirt road that will give you the opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful and best preserved engineering works of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p>In this\u00a0area there is also the<strong>\u00a0bridge of St. Peter<\/strong>, which has a height of 16 meters and is particularly impressive. Don&#8217;t miss the<strong>\u00a0bridge of St. Anthony<\/strong>, which is doubtless, one of the most beautiful. Think that in ancient times it was formed by a central arch of 30 meters. This aqueduct has been a source of inspiration for many artists and is still\u00a0 visited because, despite being subject to numerous restorations, has nevertheless retained its grandeur and all its beauty.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The aqueduct park in Gallicano<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Gallicano nel Lazio<\/strong>\u00a0there is the well-known\u00a0<strong>Parco degli Acquedotti<\/strong>. This route starts from the\u00a0<strong>Amato Bridge<\/strong>, located near Santa Maria Capua Monte, near the so-called &#8220;Tagliata&#8221; (a long artificial canyon).<\/p>\n<p>This is the first bridge that can be admired in the park of the aqueducts of Gallicano nel Lazio.<\/p>\n<p>Following the route of the aqueducts, you can discover the beauty and grandeur of the entire Roman water transport system, from the countryside of Rome to the capital of Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from the Amato Bridge, you will find, a little further on\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>Della Bullica bridge<\/strong>.
