Valmontone<\/strong>, in the province of Rome, was in the past a very important town from a strategic and communications point of view. Its importance was so high that it did not pass the enemy army or invader, that it did not think of razing it to the ground, as it has often happened until the second world war.<\/p>\n

What remains of the ancient Valmontone of historic and valuable are\u00a0Doria Pamphilj Palace<\/strong>, a building that dominates the town from above and the\u00a0Collegiate Church of the Assumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For a tourist, it may seem little. In reality these two ancient buildings have 1000 reasons to be visited and admired, passing a good half day.<\/p>\n

The History of Doria Palace in Valmontone<\/h2>\n

The idea of \u200b\u200bbuilding\u00a0Doria Pamphilj Palace<\/strong>\u00a0dates back to 1651 and was\u00a0the result of the ambition of\u00a0Camillo Pamphilj<\/strong>, nephew of the pope\u00a0of the time, Innocenzo X.<\/p>\n

At that time, Camillo bought the\u00a0fief of Valmontone<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0Barberini family<\/strong>\u00a0and decided to build on it, a\u00a0majestic palace<\/strong>\u00a0complete with armory, stables, barn, prisons and even shops.<\/p>\n

So he demolished the\u00a0Sforza Castle<\/strong>, which stood where now stands\u00a0Doria Palace<\/strong>, and within 8 years (it was 1670) the new building already dominated\u00a0on the fief of Valmontone.<\/p>\n

In his intentions,\u00a0Doria Palace in Valmontone<\/strong>\u00a0had\u00a0to be the epicenter of\u00a0the roman culture and art. A small Florence at the time of the Medici to be clear.<\/p>\n

The Interiors of Doria Pamphilj Palace<\/h2>\n

Today inside it is possible to admire a whole series of frescoes dated between 1657 and 1661, an admirable example of\u00a0“Roman” painting<\/strong>\u00a0of the period. These can be seen along the\u00a0eleven theme rooms<\/strong>\u00a0of the building. The rooms are dedicated to the four elements (air, water, fire and earth) and to the four continents (those that were known in 600).<\/p>\n

The painters who created these works were great masters of the time: Pier Francesco Mola, Gaspard Dughet, Guglielmo Cortese known as Borgognone, Francesco Cozza, Giambattista Tassi and Mattia Preti.<\/p>\n

The eleven rooms also include the sumptuous\u00a0Sala del Principe<\/strong>, and\u00a0two smaller rooms<\/strong>, the only ones not themed with elements and continents.<\/p>\n

In your half day spent visiting Valmontone do not forget to taste the excellent “gnocchi a coda de soreca<\/em>” (long dumplings that owe their name to their particular shape that resembles the tail of a rat), at one of the typical restaurants.<\/p>\n
